Paul Revere’s Bakery

2010 January 12
by Justin

Remember that bakery I wrote about in a previous post? The one in Boston’s North End (that doesn’t sound right)? It is called Bova’s. Click the link to find out more about it: http://www.northendboston.com/bovabakery/

I wouldn’t be surprised if Paul Revere picked up a loaf of bread here prior to making his famous midnight ride. The bakery is a delightful stop for anyone walking (or warning of a British invasion) along Boston’s Freedom Trail.

A Fruitful Night In Boston

2010 January 8
by Justin

I’m not sure if this was Boston’s fault or our own? However, after spending about 3 days in the city we had an insatiable appetite for fresh fruit. Were we not looking for fruit? Could we not find it? I will have to visit Boston again before I am prepared to point any fingers. After we hung out and made some images from this location near MIT, we decided to have the taxi take us to the closest supermarket and stock up on fresh fruits. No dinner at Cheers that night. We made an entire meal of raspberries, bananas, and sparkling water.

The MIT waterfront is a great location for images of the Boston Sky Line. I was unsure of this image at first, but after taking a fresh look at it I was happy with the way it turned out. The moon’s reflection in the foreground helped to bridge the gap between the viewer and the city.

Happy New Year

2009 December 31
by Justin

This image is a favorite of mine from our trip to Boston this summer. As both old and new worlds meet on the shore of the Charles, the picture tells the story of this great city.

As a holiday present to anyone who is interested, I added it as a computer desktop. Feel free to find one appropriate for your monitor resolution and hang it in your office for a while.

The North End

2009 December 29
by Justin

If you are headed to Boston, take a look at the travel resources and photo map I added to the site. I mapped some photo locations as well as provided a couple items for the non-photographers in your group.

The story behind the picture: As we explored the Freedom Trail in Boston’s famous North End we not only found a great bakery, we also found a grand old building. I set up the tripod while enjoying some pastries and a coffee. What a corner!

Across the Charles

An evening walk along the MIT waterfront will reveal a wealth of great locations for images of the Boston skyline. You will find a marina, the Harvard bridge, several crew houses, the Longfellow bridge, and stunning views of old Boston. If you are visiting, make sure to bring a variety of lenses. The Charles is quite wide and you will need a longer telephoto to get closer to the distant shore.

Feel free to use my Boston photo map as forward recon.

One If By Land

If you ever make it to Boston, plan a visit to the North End. Here you will find a majority of the Freedom Trail, warm Italian hospitality, and the Old North Church.

At the Old North Church make sure you take the ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour. Not only do you get the full account of the church they dispel a couple historical myths.

Here is a view from the bell tower where the lantern that signaled ‘by sea’ was hung (handged?). Captured with my TZ4.

Boston Bridge

In flat light, go underground…or at least under a bridge. After taking the famous Duck Tour, my wife had to field a conference call so I ducked under the O’Brien bridge in search of something interesting. I found this.

This is and HDR image consisting of 5 images. I did do some post-photomatix curves and saturation adjustments to bring out the highlights on the left side. I feel that they lead your eye to the depths of the image.

A Quick Boston Sunset

A Quick Boston Sunset, originally uploaded by LightAsMagic.

After a long day of walking the freedom trail we were rewarded with this georgeous sunset back at the room. This image was made with the Lumix TZ4 after a quick draw from the cargo pants. Photography of opportunity.

Note: With the TZ4 I ride the exposure copensation quite a bit. For this image I took 2 stops out.

Boston Fly

Boston Fly, originally uploaded by LightAsMagic.

A day of bad weather and flat light drove us inside while visiting Boston. In line at the Museum of Science we ran into the CEO of the Michael Scott Paper Company.  We didn’t bother him, it looked like he was pretty busy being a dad.  We didn’t stay long. We were there just long enough to catch this little glimpse of summer.

Note: Shot with my trusty sub $200 Lumix TZ4.
